Bollywood has been abuzz following Paresh Rawal’s unexpected announcement on May 18 that he is no longer part of the highly anticipated comedy film Hera Pheri 3. Rawal, known for his iconic role as Babu Bhaiya in the franchise, has now responded publicly to the legal action initiated by co-star Akshay Kumar.
Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) account on May 25, Rawal shared,
“My lawyer, Ameet Naik, has sent an appropriate response regarding my rightful termination and exit. Once they read my response all issues will be laid to rest.”
Akshay Kumar’s legal team had earlier warned Rawal of “severe legal consequences” for his withdrawal. Pooja Tidke, Joint Managing Partner of Parinam Law Associate, representing Akshay’s production house Cape of Good Films, told PTI that Rawal’s exit has caused significant disruption, citing incurred expenses for cast, crew, senior actors, logistics, and trailer shooting.
Tidke added that Rawal had initially confirmed his participation publicly in January, and a trailer segment of approximately three-and-a-half minutes was even filmed before Rawal suddenly issued a notice withdrawing from the project, surprising everyone involved. She emphasized the reputational damage to the franchise and the disappointment felt by fans, while expressing hope that the situation would resolve but acknowledging ongoing legal challenges.
Reports also suggest Rawal has returned his signing advance of ₹11 lakh plus 15% interest. His total agreed remuneration was reportedly ₹15 crores.
Speaking to Mid-Day, Paresh Rawal explained his departure was motivated by feeling disconnected from the project. “I know it came as a shock to many. We three (the lead actors) make a great combination with Priyadarshan ji directing, but I don’t feel like a part of it anymore,” he said. He neither confirmed nor denied if remuneration issues influenced his decision but was firm that, for now, his exit stands. “I always say never say never — the future is unpredictable.”
The Hera Pheri series, starting in 2000, won fans with its hilarious tale of two struggling tenants and their quirky landlord, with Rawal’s portrayal of Baburao Ganpatrao Apte (“Babu Bhaiya”) becoming one of Bollywood’s most beloved comedy icons. Fans have since voiced strong opinions that without Rawal’s Babu Bhaiya, Hera Pheri 3 loses its soul.
