On August 23, 2024, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) announced that it has secured the necessary sanction to prosecute Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the ongoing excise policy case. The sanction also covers Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Durgesh Pathak.
The CBI presented this development before Special Judge Kaveri Baweja, who has scheduled the next hearing for August 27, coinciding with the end of Kejriwal’s current judicial custody period. This date marks a crucial juncture in the legal proceedings as it will determine the next steps in the case.
The court had previously instructed the CBI to obtain the required sanctions within 15 days, following which the agency has now complied. CM Kejriwal has been in custody since March 21, 2024, with a brief release granted for election campaigning during the Lok Sabha elections in May.
The case centers around allegations related to Delhi’s excise policy, with the CBI investigating alleged irregularities and misconduct.
