Gurugram Woman Murdered by Live-in Partner Over Suspected Affair

A grim chapter unfolded in Gurugram this week after police arrested a man for allegedly murdering his live-in partner over suspicion of an affair, more than a month after her body was discovered in an agricultural field. The victim, identified as Rita (35), originally hailed from Bihar and had been living in Gurugram’s Naharpur village following a separation from her husband of 11 years. Police say her alleged killer, 38-year-old Shivshankar Sharma, also known by his alias Kalicharan, was taken into custody on Monday after weeks of investigation. Rita's decomposing body was discovered on March 11 in a wheat field, wrapped in a blanket. It remained unidentified for 20 days before her father, arriving from Bihar, was able to recognize her on March 31. An FIR for murder was subsequently registered at Manesar police station based on his complaint. According to police officials, Rita had moved to Naharpur with her husband around five years ago, but the couple separated due to personal differences. Following the split, Rita began living with Sharma, a native of Ballia district in Uttar Pradesh, who worked as a daily wage labourer. Rita was employed at a private company in IMT Manesar. "I last spoke to my daughter on February 23 when I visited her in Naharpur," Rita's father told police. It was later revealed that this was the very day she was killed. During interrogation, Sharma confessed to the crime, reportedly driven by jealousy and suspicion that Rita was involved in another relationship. "He admitted to strangling her in a fit of rage before wrapping her body in a blanket and dumping it in a nearby field under the cover of night," a Gurugram police spokesperson said. Authorities are expected to present Sharma in a city court on Tuesday and will seek police remand for further questioning. The incident has sparked concerns over the increasing reports of domestic violence and intimate partner violence in urban India, especially in rapidly growing regions like Gurugram where large migrant populations often live without strong community support systems. "This is a tragic reminder of the consequences of unresolved conflict and unchecked suspicion within personal relationships," a senior police official noted. Investigations are ongoing.
