New Delhi, May 9 - India on Friday opposed the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) proposal to grant Pakistan a new loan of $2.3 billion, citing concerns that the funds could be misused to finance state-sponsored cross-border terrorism. India chose to abstain from voting on the matter during an important IMF meeting.
The outcome of the vote was not immediately available at the time of writing. However, India expressed its reservations, emphasizing Pakistan's poor track record in handling financial aid responsibly. The Ministry of Finance issued a statement warning that the funds could potentially be diverted to support terrorist activities.
The IMF’s board convened on Friday to review Pakistan’s Extended Fund Facility (EFF) loan program, during which India voiced its opposition. The board also discussed a new loan for Pakistan under the Flexible and Resilient Support Facility (RFSF), worth $1.3 billion.
India highlighted that rewarding a country that promotes cross-border terrorism sends a dangerous message to the global community and undermines the credibility of funding agencies and donors.
