Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections: Over 61% Voter Turnout in First Phase

In the first phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections held on Wednesday, more than 61.13% voter turnout was recorded across 24 constituencies. The Election Commission reported that voting commenced peacefully at 7 AM amid tight security in the Union Territory. This election holds significant importance as it is the first assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of most provisions of Article 370 in August 2019.

District-wise Voting

Kishtwar district saw the highest voter turnout at 80.14%, followed by Ramban with 70.55%, Doda with 71.34%, Kulgam with 62.60%, Anantnag with 57.84%, and Shopian with 55.96%. Pulwama recorded the lowest turnout at 46.65%. Voting took place across 24 constituencies, of which 16 were in the Kashmir Valley and 8 in the Jammu region. A total of over 2.3 million voters are deciding the fate of 219 candidates, including 90 independent candidates.

Peaceful Voting and Security Arrangements

The election was largely peaceful, with men, women, youth, elderly, and disabled voters patiently waiting to cast their votes at polling stations. However, minor clashes between party workers were reported in some areas of Bijbehara and DH Pora, but swift action by security forces quickly brought the situation under control.

Leaders’ Appeals

Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged voters, especially the youth and first-time voters, to participate in large numbers in this festival of democracy. Home Minister Amit Shah called on voters to elect a stable and progressive government, focusing on education, employment, and women’s empowerment. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge reminded voters of the changes made to Jammu and Kashmir’s status and urged them to vote to protect their rights. He emphasized that this election would shape the future of peace, stability, and development in the region.

Statements from Rahul Gandhi and Omar Abdullah

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, appealing for support for the opposition alliance ‘INDIA,’ said the election is an opportunity for the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir to reclaim their constitutional rights and promote job opportunities. He described the abrogation of Article 370 as a “violation of constitutional rights” and urged voters to vote for a prosperous future. National Conference leader Omar Abdullah remarked that it is difficult to forget the events of August 5, 2019, making this election crucial for the future of Jammu and Kashmir.

After the first phase of voting, all eyes are now on the upcoming phases. Overall, the peaceful and widespread voter participation reflects the people’s desire to use their democratic rights to move towards a stable and prosperous future.
