Kolkata medical trainee assault-murder case live: The Supreme Court will recommence hearing the petitions related to the tragic death of a medical intern at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is also expected to present its progress report on the investigation. Following the Supreme Court’s directives on August 20, the CBI will provide a confidential status report to Chief Justice DY Chandrachud.
Previously, the Supreme Court took cognizance of the Kolkata assault-murder incident on its own accord and instructed the CBI to submit a report on the investigation by August 22. The CBI was also tasked with examining the vandalism at the hospital and detailing all occurrences.
The Supreme Court criticized the handling of the case by the West Bengal government and demanded an account of the actions of the mob that entered the hospital during a peaceful demonstration.
The CBI recently interrogated Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Hospital, for the sixth consecutive day.
As nationwide protests continue, the Supreme Court has established a national task force to address the broader issue of ensuring the safety of healthcare professionals, particularly women.
Medical associations that have been on strike have assured their cooperation with the national task force and called for a central law to address the safety concerns.
The task force has been mandated to submit an interim report within three weeks and a comprehensive report within two months.
