GURUGRAM: Shocking new details have emerged in the Medanta Hospital ICU assault case. Police revealed that the accused, who is now in custody, had watched pornographic videos both before and after allegedly sexually assaulting a patient in critical care. The accused, 25-year-old Deepak, had been working as a technician in the ICU for the past five months. Originally from Badhauli village in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district, he had completed his BSc in Operation Theatre Technology from a private institute and was living in Gurugram. According to investigators, a search of his phone confirmed a pattern of porn viewing, and during questioning, he confessed to the crime. Deepak was presented before a local court and has now been sent to judicial custody. The survivor, a 46-year-old air hostess, was admitted to Medanta Hospital on April 5 for emergency treatment and was placed on a ventilator. She alleges that the assault happened on April 6, while she was still in a vulnerable state. She also stated that two nurses were in the ICU at the time but failed to intervene. She remained silent until she was discharged from the hospital on April 13, after which she shared the incident with her husband. A complaint was filed the next day at the Sadar Police Station, and an FIR was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) — Section 64 (rape) and Section 68 (sexual exploitation by someone in a position of authority). In response to the seriousness of the case, Police Commissioner Vikas Kumar Arora had set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by DCP Dr Arpit Jain, which led to Deepak's arrest on Friday. The case has triggered strong public outrage and renewed concerns over patient safety in hospitals, especially for those who are unconscious or critically ill. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have promised strict action against anyone else found negligent in this case.
