India on Friday accused Pakistan of launching cowardly and provocative attacks on 36 locations across the western front from Leh to Sir Creek using 300 - 400 drones. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that these attacks, which included the use of civilian aircraft as shields, received a proportionate and effective response from Indian forces.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, addressing the media alongside Colonel Sophia Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, said Pakistan’s intent behind deploying such a large number of drones was to gather intelligence on India’s air defense systems.
Colonel Qureshi detailed how, on the night of May 8-9, Pakistan violated Indian airspace multiple times, targeting military infrastructure with drones and heavy artillery. Despite such aggression, she emphasized that India acted with restraint and responsibility, prioritizing the safety of international civil aviation.
Pakistan had not closed its airspace to civilian flights during these attacks. Colonel Qureshi cited a specific instance of a civilian flight from Dammam to Lahore flying through the active airspace, effectively being used as a shield. Meanwhile, in contrast, India had closed its own airspace in the Punjab sector for civilian flights during heightened military alertness.
One drone targeted the Bathinda military station but was successfully intercepted and destroyed by Indian forces. In retaliation, India launched drone strikes on four Pakistani air defense sites, successfully destroying an AD radar installation.
According to officials, many of the drones used by Pakistan were of Turkish origin, and several were neutralized by Indian forces. Pakistan also carried out heavy shelling across the LoC in areas like Tangdhar, Uri, Poonch, Mendhar, Rajouri, Akhnoor, and Udhampur, using high-caliber artillery and armed drones. This led to casualties and injuries among Indian soldiers.
Foreign Secretary Misri condemned Pakistan's use of civilian infrastructure as cover and its official denials as "absurd" and "deceitful." He emphasized that India’s armed forces responded in a measured but forceful manner to safeguard national security and protect civilians.
