Yesterday’s big news…
1. Haryana assembly election date changed; voting on October 5th instead of October 1st
The Election Commission has changed the date for the Haryana Assembly elections. Voting for the state’s 90 seats will now take place on October 5th instead of October 1st. The results will be announced on October 8th, along with the Jammu & Kashmir assembly election results. Earlier, the results for both states were to be announced on October 4th. This isn’t the first time assembly election dates have been changed. Earlier, dates for elections in Rajasthan, Mizoram, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh were also changed.
Reason for the date change: The All India Bishnoi Mahasabha in Rajasthan had requested the Election Commission to change the date. They stated that many families from Punjab, Rajasthan, and Haryana have been participating in the annual event at their ancestral village Mukam in Bikaner district during the ‘Asoj’ month Amavasya, in memory of Guru Jambheshwar. This event falls on October 2nd. As a result, thousands of Bishnoi families from Sirsa, Fatehabad, and Hisar would travel to Rajasthan on voting day and would be unable to cast their votes on October 1st. The Bishnoi community has significant influence in 11 assembly constituencies.
