West Bengal Governor Announces Urgent Meeting in Response to Kolkata Medical College Tragedy

On Sunday night, West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose announced that he has called an emergency meeting involving a broad segment of Bengal society. The meeting is intended to inform them about the actions taken in response to the rape and murder case at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital and to seek their opinions on the matter.

This action follows a letter from former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh, who urged both the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Governor Bose to take urgent and decisive measures.

Governor Bose shared on social media platform X, “In response to the letter from Shri Harbhajan Singh expressing his deep concern over the tragic incident at R.G. Kar Medical College, I have called an emergency meeting to update on the actions taken and to gather opinions from various sections of Bengal society.”

He also mentioned that he would be addressing Singh regarding the measures taken and expressed solidarity with the citizens across India who have shown strong concern about the incident and perceived governmental inaction.

Earlier, Harbhajan Singh voiced his frustration on X about the delay in justice for the victim and highlighted the necessity for prompt action.

Singh stated, “With deep anguish over the delay in justice for the Kolkata rape and murder victim, I have sent a heartfelt appeal to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Governor Bose, urging immediate and decisive action.”

He emphasized that the safety and dignity of women are essential and that those responsible for this severe crime must receive exemplary punishment.

Singh added, “The safety and dignity of women are non-negotiable. The offenders of this horrific crime must face the full extent of the law, and the punishment must be exemplary. This is crucial for restoring trust in our system and ensuring such tragedies do not occur again, fostering a society where every woman feels secure.”

On August 9, a postgraduate trainee doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College in Kolkata was raped and murdered while on duty, which led to nationwide strikes and protests by the medical community. On August 14, the protest site and the hospital campus at R.G. Kar were vandalized by a mob.
