Social media was abuzz after the horrific murder of Trainee Doctor Moumita Debnath, who was killed at her workplace, went viral. Following the brutality that befell this doctor, women across India have taken to the streets in protest, demanding justice.
The victim was treated with the same cruelty as animals are slaughtered. Imagine the plight of women, if even a doctor is not safe at her workplace. What exactly happened to Trainee Doctor? Read her tragic story below.
MURDERED WHILE RESTING AT THE HOSPITAL
On the night of August 8th, a 31-year-old female doctor moumita debnath had just completed her duties like every other day. After finishing her night shift, Trainee Doctor had dinner with her fellow on-duty doctors at 2 a.m.
Exhausted from working for 36 hours straight, Trainee Doctor moumita debnath decided to rest by preparing to sleep in the doctor’s rest room used by hospital staff who work long night hours. She was forced to work for 36 hours straight and was subjected to torture.
But what she didn’t know was that this would be the last time she would close her eyes feeling calm and safe.
The next morning of August 9th, Assistant Superintendent Dwaipayan Biswas informed Trainee Doctor’s family that their daughter had died by suicide. However, when the family arrived at the hospital, they were forced to wait outside for three hours and were not allowed to see her body.
When the family was finally permitted to see their daughter, they were shocked to find Trainee Doctor’s body lying exposed. Her legs were positioned at a 90-degree angle, indicating severe pelvic bone injuries.
The victim was assaulted and murdered in the doctor’s rest room, and later her body was placed in the seminar hall.
AUTOPSY REPORT REVEALS THE ATROCITIES INFLICTED
The initial autopsy report conducted on Trainee Doctor moumita debnath’s body revealed that she had been raped and strangled to death.
Additionally, her hyoid bone (neck bone) was broken, she had cuts on her lips, a fractured pelvis (one of the strongest bones in the human body), bleeding from the mouth, damage and bleeding in both eyes, injuries to her abdomen and left leg, a broken ring finger, and hundreds of bite marks were found all over her body.
As if that wasn’t enough, she also had severe injuries to her abdomen and bleeding in her private parts.
Her legs were also found in a 90-degree angle position. The cruelty of the criminals is evident, as the pelvis is the strongest joint in the human body, requiring a force of between 2,000 to 10,000 Newtons to break an adult pelvis capsule.
There were also signs of a struggle on her face, believed to be caused by the suspect’s nails, indicating that the female doctor fought back.
Moreover, according to sources on social media platform X, it is understood that the doctor’s death allegedly involved 18 to 20 men, and one of them who held Trainee Doctor’s hand throughout the torture was a female doctor who was her friend!
POLICE AND HOSPITAL NEGLIGENCE
After the incident involving Trainee Doctor went public, various allegations and revelations went viral on social media, leading to much speculation about her death.
The question arises as to why a suicide theory was developed when the evidence pointed towards a murder. This information was also shared with the doctor’s family, who were told that their daughter had committed suicide. The intentions behind this narrative are currently under investigation by the CBI.
On August 22, the Supreme Court criticized the police and hospital management for their negligence. The court pointed out that FIR should have been filed immediately and emphasized the delay in documenting the death.
It’s no wonder, as when it was claimed that Trainee Doctor had been gang-raped, the police denied this. Additionally, the hospital itself did not take the matter seriously and only filed a report after the situation had escalated.
Even Trainee Doctor’s parents expressed their lack of trust in the Kolkata police, fearing that the investigation into their daughter’s murder would not be conducted properly and that the culprits would go unpunished.
On the night of August 15th, around 7,000 people went to the crime scene to destroy and erase evidence. Just imagine, 7,000 people have come to the hospital to erase the evidence of the crime. This shows the magnitude of this crime and hints at the involvement of highly powerful individuals. The police seemed unable to prevent this from happening, leaving the public disappointed.
As a result, the High Court also criticized Bengal’s Minister of State Affairs, Mamata Banerjee, and the state police for failing to control the situation. Especially when the public could easily access the crime scene.
On August 13th, the Kolkata High Court ordered the state police to hand over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) due to dissatisfaction with the investigation conducted so far.
ONE SUSPECT ARRESTED, CONNECTION WITH THE POLICE?
Sanjay Roy, a Civic Assistant, was remanded by the police until August 23rd after his earphones were found next to Trainee Doctor’s body. Sanjay reportedly confessed to committing the heinous crime. He even challenged the authorities to sentence him to death.
It is said that the suspect, who was a police volunteer, had access to the entire healthcare center. He was also previously stationed at the police post near the medical college and often acted as an intermediary for patients he knew.
Moreover, the Kolkata police are believed to have found extreme pornographic content on Sanjay’s mobile phone.
Sanjay, who was a former boxer (security guard), had a criminal record of wife abuse and had been married four times!
Sanjay was also close to several senior police officers and was appointed as a member of the Kolkata Police Welfare Unit, stationed at the R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital.
After committing the crime, Sanjay reportedly went to the police barracks and slept until morning.
Allegations against RG Kar Medical College and Hospital
This murder could not have been committed by just one person, it’s not possible for a single individual to carry out such an act without a weapon. Many people could be involved, and they might be from within the hospital, from outside, or a combination of both. Please do not view this incident as just another rape case, it is far more than that. Incidents of rape and murder are emerging from other states as well, but the situation here is entirely different.
This incident happened in West Bengal district of India. The situation here is very bad. People have lost faith in the law and the government. The state government’s police were investigating the case, but due to improper handling, the High Court has transferred it to the CBI and the Supreme Court. A significant amount of evidence has already been destroyed, yet the CBI continues its efforts.
Numerous criminal activities have occurred within the hospital, including scams, corruption, the illegal sale of medical waste, and involvement in a drug racket. Medical waste was being illegally sent to Bangladesh, and the operation must have involved powerful political figures, as such a scheme would not be possible without their involvement. These revelations have come to light through interviews with some lawyers , co-workers and students.
Lakhs of rupees were charged for providing degree certificates to students, and those who couldn’t pay were tortured. A co-worker also mentioned that some individuals there used to bring girls from outside to the hospital guest house. The mastermind behind all this is said to be the college principal, Sandeep Ghosh, who had removed some of the CCTVs from the college. However, many others might also be involved in this illicit activity.
Allegations of Organ Trafficking, Sex-Drug Racket in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata. A recent report by Akhtar Ali, who formerly served as the deputy superintendent at R G Kar Medical College, has leveled serious accusations against Ghosh and other college officials. The claims involve unauthorized leasing of government property, favoritism in hiring, awarding contracts to unqualified entities, demanding a 20% commission, participating in an illegal cross-border medical waste recycling operation, and financial discrepancies highlighted by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).
Anyone who opposed these activities faced torture or even death. The victim’s death was intended to create an atmosphere of fear, discouraging others from protesting or speaking out against these crimes. The victim had to suffer the consequences. After the incident, the students who were protesting have been transferred to another college. So keep protesting and exert pressure on the government until both the culprit and their protectors are held accountable.
NATIONWIDE PROTESTS FOR DOCTOR
After news of Trainee Doctor spread, many women across India took to the streets in large-scale protests. These protests were carried out because this case proved that Indian women are in an unsafe situation.
Additionally, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) also staged protests nationwide, where doctors took to the streets and did not attend work for 24 hours, starting from 6 AM on August 17th to 6 AM on August 18th, demanding increased security in hospitals, especially for female doctors.
A polygraph test will be conducted on six individuals, including the accused Sanjay Roy, involved in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor. Among those being tested are the former college principal, Sandeep Ghosh, and four doctors who had dinner with the victim on the night of August 8th.
On Friday, August 23rd, the CBI presented the main accused, Sanjay Roy, in Sealdah’s Special Court, where the court ordered his judicial custody for 14 days. During the hearing, Sanjay agreed to undergo the polygraph test.
Doctors in Kolkata continue their strike on the 15th day (August 23rd) in protest of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at R G Kar Medical College on August 9th. They stated, “We have not received justice, so we will not return to work.”
Meanwhile, other organizations, including the United Doctors Front Association (UDAF), Resident Doctors Association (RDA), and the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA), have called off the strike.
More tragically, the incident involving Dr. Trainee Doctor is not the first of its kind. Several other doctors, such as Dr. Aradhya, Dr. Priyanka Reddy, Dr. Shweta Sinha, and Dr. Anjali Sinha, have also experienced similar fates.
If we look at crime statistics in India, there were 31,516 reported rape cases in 2022, which is roughly 86 rape cases happening every day.
So, imagine, if this could happen to an educated woman, what fate must the other women in India, who don’t have a voice, endure?
To date, an online petition on change.org titled ‘Fair Investigation and Justice for the Rape and Murder of a Medical Intern from Kolkata!’ has received nearly 150,000 signatures from around the world.
Hopefully, Trainee Doctor moumita debnath gets the justice she deserves and those responsible are punished to the fullest extent.
