Meerut Building Collapse Claims 3 Lives, Including a Child; Rescue Efforts Ongoing

Meerut: A building collapse in the densely populated Zakir Colony of Meerut resulted in the deaths of three people, including a young child, on Saturday evening. Rescue operations are in full swing as authorities search for three more individuals who remain missing. Despite adverse weather conditions, teams have successfully rescued five children, two women, and one man from the debris.

District Magistrate Deepak Meena confirmed the details, stating, “A total of 14 people were in the building at the time of the collapse. Three managed to escape on their own. Out of the 11 who were trapped, eight have been rescued while three others are still missing. Unfortunately, three people have died.”

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vipin Tada mentioned that the survivors were immediately rushed to the district hospital. Many sustained severe injuries, and one woman is currently in critical condition. “A 1.5-year-old girl, Shimra, was among those who lost their lives in this tragedy,” he reported.

DK Thakur, the Additional Director General of Police for the Meerut zone, explained that emergency teams, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), were quickly deployed after receiving the distress call around 5 p.m. These units are still actively involved in the rescue mission.

Initial assessments by the district authorities indicate that heavy rainfall over the last three days might have weakened the structure, leading to the collapse.
